The surname “Marsalis” may just be the first name in American jazz. Branford Marsalis born today 8/26/60 got started in a group with his brothers Wynton, Jason, Ellis III and Delfeayo, he quickly moved on to play with Art Blakey and others. This ultimately led to a three-year stint as bandleader on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Since then, he’s been playing his heart out in concerts, on recordings and even in the classical world. We caught Branford in a soulful moment at a jazz festival in Monterey, CA. If you get the chance to see him in action, take note — you don’t want to miss it.
